About Blur & Pixelate

Sharing screenshots and photos on the web often inadvertently exposes sensitive personal identifiable information (PII) — including faces of minors or bystanders, vehicle license plates, house numbers, banking details, and confidential email addresses.

Our Blur & Pixelate tool provides a dependable, manual redaction workflow that permanently destroys the underlying pixel data in chosen regions. Unlike simple visual markup tools that merely place a transparent layer on top, our canvas engine recalculates and burns the filtered pixels directly into the exported image buffer.

Critically for privacy and security, all filtering is computed entirely on your device using client-side HTML5 Canvas. Your unredacted personal files never leave your computer or phone.

Common Use Cases

Censoring Faces & IdentitiesBlur faces of bystanders, children, or confidential witnesses in crowd photos before publishing.
Hiding Vehicle License PlatesPixelate vehicle license plates in automotive photography or real estate listing images.
Sanitizing Screenshots for Bug ReportsRedact API keys, passwords, email addresses, and customer data from software screenshots before sharing on GitHub or Slack.
Financial & Identification DocumentsConceal credit card numbers, social security digits, and banking details when uploading utility bills or proof of address.
Notes & Format Guidelines
  • Redaction is manual and does not use automated AI face detection, ensuring 100% deterministic control over what gets censored.
  • Redacted pixels are irreversibly altered upon export; keep a safe backup of your unredacted original if needed.
  • Ensure your selection box covers the entire sensitive area with ample padding to prevent partial character leakage.

Questions & Answers

Answers to common questions about blur & pixelate.

Can someone un-blur or reverse the pixelation on the exported image?

No. When you export, the original pixel values inside the selected box are permanently replaced with blurred or block-averaged color values. There is no hidden original data retained in the file.

What is the difference between Gaussian Blur and Pixelate?

Gaussian Blur smoothly softens and blends adjacent pixels, creating a smooth frosted-glass look. Pixelate groups pixels into large, uniform color blocks (mosaic effect), commonly seen in news broadcasts.

Can I blur multiple faces or regions in a single photo?

Yes! You can draw as many rectangular boxes as you need across the image. Each box can be independently toggled between blur and pixelate or removed.

Does my sensitive image get uploaded to a cloud server?

No. All image decoding, filtering, and encoding happen strictly inside your browser. No files are ever sent to any remote server.
